SAVE THE DATE!

We would like to invite students at your school who are interested in careers in medical, biological research and/or bio-defense to join us for an “Exploring Careers in a Scientific Environment Symposium” on Thursday, November 6, 2014. The goal of the symposium is to highlight career paths for students while presenting an overview of research conducted at Fort Detrick and the National Cancer Institute (NCI) at Frederick campuses by the various National Interagency Confederation for Biological Research (NICBR) partners. The NICBR is a partnership of federal government agencies with laboratories on the Fort Detrick and NCI at Frederick campuses, including the U.S. Army; Department of Homeland Security; Department of Agriculture; U.S. Navy; NCI and National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, part of the National Institutes of Health; Food and Drug Administration; and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The event is sponsored by the National Interagency Confederation for Biological Research (NICBR), a partnership of federal government agencies with laboratories on the Fort Detrick and NCI at Frederick campuses, including the U.S. Army, the National Cancer Institute, the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Agriculture, the U.S. Navy, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, the Food and Drug Administration, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Sign-in for the symposium will begin at 8:00 a.m., with events held from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and tours extending until 4:00 p.m. During the morning, representatives from the various NICBR laboratories will discuss different potential career paths available at their agencies, as well as describe research programs and opportunities for internships and fellowships. After the morning presentations, participants will have the opportunity to chat with the speakers and obtain additional information during an informal lunch. Participants will need to purchase their own lunch, and a café is available on location. After lunch, there will be a panel Q&A session where participants will have the opportunity to obtain more information on career development. Some agencies will offer tours at their respective laboratories in the afternoon. All participants should register before the event at http://ncifrederick.cancer.gov/events/NECSES/default.asp.

The deadline for registration is October 24, 2014.

Driving directions to Fort Detrick and NCI at Frederick campuses are available on the website. Although the tours are open to both U.S. and non-U.S. citizens, it is essential that everyone register early to provide sufficient time for the clearance process.
