SAVE THE DATE!
We would like to invite you and any students at your school who are interested in careers in medical, biological research and/or bio-defense to join us for an Exploring Careers in a Scientific Environment Symposium on Thursday, November 15, 2012. The goal of the symposium is to highlight career paths for students while presenting an overview of research being performed on Fort Detrick and Frederick National Lab campuses by the various NICBR partners.
The event is sponsored by the National Interagency Confederation for Biological Research (NICBR), a partnership of federal government agencies with laboratories on the Fort Detrick and NCI Frederick campuses, including the US Army, the National Cancer Institute, the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Agriculture, the US Navy, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The symposium will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m, with tours extending until 4:00. Sign-in will begin at 8:00 a.m. During the morning, representatives from the various NICBR laboratories will introduce the types of potential career paths available at their agencies while describing research programs and opportunities for internships and fellowships. After the morning presentations, participants will have the opportunity to chat with the speakers and obtain additional information during an informal lunch period. Participants will need to purchase their own lunch; a Café is available on location for your convenience. After lunch there will be a panel Q&A session during which participants will have the opportunity to obtain more information on career development. Some agencies will offer tours at their various laboratories (pre-registration for tours is required) in the afternoon. Because of security concerns, it will be necessary for each agency to carry out minimal "background checks," so all participants are required to register in advance of the event on the web site below:
http://ncifrederick.cancer.gov/events/NECSES/default.asp.
Driving directions to Fort Detrick and Frederick National Lab campuses are available on this site. Although the tours are open to both US and non-US citizens, it is essential that everyone register early to provide sufficient time for the clearance process.
The deadline for registration is November 1, 2012.
Please share this information with your students and colleagues. You may contact Alice Jones directly at alice.m.jones@us.army.mil if you would like more information.
We look forward to seeing you at the NICBR Exploring Careers in a Scientific Environment Symposium!
