Strain Description: These mice express SV40 T/t antigen under control of the lactotropic hormone-inducible whey acidic protein (Wap) promoter, which is specific for mammary gland epithelial (ME) cells. Females synthesize T/t antigen (Tag) in ME cells during pregnancy and the lactation period. Mice that undergo at least one pregnancy develop palpable mammary tumors (adenocarcinomas) at 6 months of age. Female transgenic mice cannot be used as breeders due to a lactation defect.

Cryopreservation Mating Scheme: The cryopreservation mating scheme is C57BL/6 females x hemizygous males. When maintained as a live colony, breeder pairs were distributed as a hemizygote (male or female) x wildtype C57BL/6 (male or female). Females don't lactate (Tzeng et al., FEBS Lett 19, 215-218, 1996). Average litter size is 8.
