Strain Description: Livers of Ahr(-/-) mice are about 50% the size of normal livers and exhibit hepatic portal hypertension. Mice have enlarged hearts (cardiomyopathy). There is decreased accumulation of B lymphocytes in the lymph nodes and spleen but the thymus is normal. Ahr(-/-) mice are unresponsive to dioxin-induced catabolism of foreign compounds. They also have higher incidences of liver tumors and gastric polyps than do wild-type mice. Although about half of the original homozygous Ahrtm1Gonz (Ahr -/-) mice died shortly after birth the survivors reached maturity and were fertile. Breeding these survivors produces 100% survival of littermates, the neonatal phenotype apparently being lost.
