Strain Description: This strain carries a deletion of exons 3-8 in the multiple endocrine neoplasia, type 1 tumor suppressor gene. Mice heterozygous for the Men1tm1Ctre allele develop a phenotype very similar to the human MEN1 disease. By nine months of age pancreatic islets exhibit hyperplasia and insulin-producing islet cell tumors. Parathyroid adenomas are also seen. By sixteen months of age larger pancreatic and parathyroid tumors are found as well as tumors of the thyroid, adrenal cortex and pituitary. These tumors form as a result of loss of heterozygosity (LOH). Mice homozygous for the mutation die in utero at E11.5-12.5.

Cryopreservation Mating Scheme: The cryopreservation mating scheme is FVB females x heterozygous males. When maintained as a live colony, breeder pairs were distributed as a heterozygote (male or female) x wildtype mouse from the colony. This strain is maintained by crossing heterozygotes with wildtype mates from the colony, preferably not siblings in order to avoid inbreeding.
