Strain Description: Mice homozygous for this mutation (-/-) have a reduced number of circulating granulocytes, basophils and eosinophils, and a reduction in the number of circulating myeloid cells. There is no increase in spontaneous tumors over wildtype (+/+) littermates during the first year of life, but -/- mice develop more tumors than +/+ mice when exposed to dimethylbenzanthracene (DMBA) followed by 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA). Retinoic acid has little growth suppressive activity on embryonic fibroblasts (MEFs) derived from -/- mice. MEFs derived from -/- mice grow faster than those derived from +/+ mice and are markedly better at forming colonies. According to the Donating Investigator, Dr. Pier Paolo Pandolfi, this strain is susceptible to staph infections. No special husbandry precautions are used to prevent them provided normal safety measures are utilized.
