Strain Description: Homozygous embryos do not survive past embryonic day 6.5. Heterozygous mice develop tumors in a variety of organs. These include tumors of the uterus, prostate, thyroid, colon, and adrenal medulla. Pten (+/-) mice are predisposed to intestinal polyposis. Tumor phenotypes vary depending upon mouse genetic background.
Heterozygous females are fertile only for a brief period of 2-3 months due to uterine neoplasia.

Cryopreservation Mating Scheme: The cryopreservation mating scheme is C57BL/6 females x heterozygous males. When maintained as a live colony, breeder pairs were distributed as a heterozygous male x wildtype C57BL/6 female. The main breeding problem is that +/- females are fertile for a brief period between 2 to 3 months. This is because they develop a uterine neoplasia. To get best results, the donating lab recommends mating male +/- with wild type (+/+) females from the colony.
