A Friendly Reminder

Kindle Basics

Turning on: Slide the bar on the top of the Kindle to the right. Slide the bar right again to put the Kindle to sleep. A screensaver appears in sleep mode.

Turning off: Slide the bar on the top of the Kindle right and hold it for several seconds to turn it off. The screen will go blank.

BACK button: Wherever you are, you can go back to where you were previously.

5-way controller: Selects an item or action when pressed down. Moves the on-screen highlight or cursor up and down when moved up and down. Moves the on-screen highlight or cursor side-to-side when moved left or right.

Headphone jack: Plug in your headphones to listen to an audiobook, background music, or content read aloud through text-to-speech. Attaching headphones turns off the built-in speakers.

HOME button: Takes you to the 'table of contents' for the Kindle.

MENU button: Within a book-- allows you to navigate around that book or add a bookmark.

NEXT PAGE button (right arrow): Takes you to the next page.

PREV PAGE button (left arrow): Takes you back a page.

Symbol key: Presents a menu of punctuation marks and symbols. Move the 5-way controller to select the desired symbol and press the 5-way to select.

TEXT key (AA): Change the text size, words per line, and screen rotation settings, also turn on the text to sound feature.

USB/power port: Attach the USB cord into the micro-USB/power port and into the Kindle to charge the Kindle battery. The charging status light will turn yellow, indicating that the battery is charging; you can continue to use the Kindle while it charges. A green light indicates that the battery is fully charged. Check to make sure the power adapter is not covered by anything that could cause it to overheat. If the charge indicator light does not light up, make sure that the USB cable is fully inserted into your Kindle and your computer.

Volume control button: Located on the side of the Kindle.

Features and Functions

Add a bookmark: Choose a place or places to bookmark, press the MENU key, and select "Add a Bookmark." You will see that the upper right corner of the page is dog-eared. To remove a bookmark, choose a page that is bookmarked, press the MENU key, and select "Delete a Bookmark."

Find the book you want and choose it: Press the HOME button. Use the 5-way controller to move the selector line to the book you want. Push down on the 5-way controller to select the book.

Finding your place in the book: The Kindle will always return to the last page viewed.

Go to Beginning: Press the MENU button and choose Go to.... Use the 5-way controller to choose the beginning of the book.

Go to Page: Press the MENU button and choose Go to.... Type the number of the page you want to jump to and select the page option by pressing down the 5-way controller.

Screen Rotation: The Kindle will automatically select portrait or landscape display based on how the device is oriented when you are holding it. You can also set your preference for screen orientation by pressing the Text key (AA) and choosing the Screen Rotation.

Search This Book: Allows you to look for a word(s) in the book by pressing the MENU button.

Sleep: The device will go to sleep within 10 minutes, if not used. A screensaver appears in sleep mode. Slide the top bar to the right to quickly wake it up.

Text to speech: Let the Kindle read to you by choosing the Text key (AA), if the publisher allows.

A Friendly Reminder

Returning the Kindle to the Library: We ask that you please return the Kindle to the Circulation Desk. Please be sure that all materials that were included- instructions and USB/power cord - are all in the box. The power cord must include the power adapter plug. Please be sure to turn the Kindle off completely. Please do not return the Kindle through the book drop. Hand it to a staff member.
