Who's Using the Scientific Library

There and Back Again: A Postbac’s Tale By Julie Nyman

Julie Nyman

In 2010, I began an internship at the Scientific Library at NCI at Frederick. I met several people, including Tracie Frederick, Alan Doss, Sue Wilson, and Susie Culler. I learned to navigate the Library websites and to generate data to help improve those websites. I worked hard on four different projects and at the end of the 3-month long internship, gave a presentation outlining what I learned and achieved. Shortly after the internship ended, I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry from Hood College.

Years later, in 2017, after completing my studies of the interactions of small molecules with HIV RNA and achieving a Master of Science degree in Biochemistry at the University of Maryland Baltimore County, I find myself back at the NCI at Frederick! This time, I am a post-baccalaureate fellow in the building across from the Library. I work in Dr. Stuart le Grice’s lab to help determine the three-dimensional structure of an integral part of the hepatitis B viral pregenomic RNA using computational techniques. I have lots of amazing opportunities to present my work and to attend cutting edge scientific seminars, many of which are located in the conference rooms adjacent to the Library! Since returning to NCI at Frederick, Tracie Frederick, now Library Director, and the Library staff have helped me locate books whose stories about women in science serve as the basis of a blog I am writing, What disability?!. Life has a funny way of coming full circle!

Library Instruction

Library Orientation

Library Orientation sessions are held monthly on Thursdays from 2:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. in the Library’s Technology Training Lab, Building 549.  The dates of upcoming sessions are July 11, August 8 and September 12.  We invite all employees to attend these sessions to learn about the many services and resources offered by the Library.  Registration is not required.

If you are not able to make it to our scheduled classes, our librarians can work with your schedule to provide one-on-one training at your convenience, either on the NCI-Frederick campus, at the ATRF, or via WebEx.  For questions, or if you have a suggestion for a class offering, please contact us with your thoughts.

Resource Training

Publons

Publons is the new home of ResearcherID, an identification system for scientific authors.  This free service has added features so that researchers may track their publications, citation metrics, peer review history and journal affiliations in one place.  Publons collects information about peer reviews and builds public reviewer profiles.  You can create a free Publons profile, or if you previously had a ResearcherID, Web of Science, or EndNote account, you may sign in with your credentials for one of those services.  As a result of using Publons, you can download a summary of your scholarly impact as an author, editor, and peer reviewer.

Quick Tips

Are you looking for influential publications in a field? If you assume that most people cite other’s works because they have had an influence on their own, then highly cited research articles could qualify.  One easy way to discover these publications is to sort the list of publications in a field by the number of times each has been cited, highest to lowest. Two respected databases that allow you to sort results by times cited are Web of Science and Scopus. Both are available from the Scientific Library’s website. Perform a search in either of these databases with search terms that define a field and click the “Times Cited” link at the top of search results in Web or Science or select “Cited by (highest)” from the “Sort on” dropdown menu at the top of search results in Scopus.

Summer Events at the Scientific Library: Student Jeopardy and Summer Video Series

Join the Scientific Library for two popular summer events: the Student Science Jeopardy Tournament and the Summer Video Series!

For 13 years, the Scientific Library has hosted the Student Science Jeopardy Tournament for teams of high school and undergraduate student interns.  The 13th Annual Student Science Jeopardy Tournament is scheduled for Wednesday, July 24, beginning at 10:00 a.m. in the Building 549 auditorium.  The event is open to the public and will also be videocast to the ATRF on the first floor.

Registration is open until Wednesday, July 17, or until the maximum 10 teams (2 students each) are registered; any interns interested in participating can go to the Student Jeopardy webpage to register.  Everyone is welcome to attend and cheer on the students.

Every summer, the Scientific Library also offers a Summer Video Series.  This year, the Library is showing the 5-part series Dynasties.  This BBC documentary series follows the true stories of five animals – penguins, chimpanzees, lions, painted wolves, and tigers – as they struggle against rivals and against the forces of nature, fighting for their own survival and for the future of their dynasties.  The Summer Video Series will be shown at both the Advanced Technology Research Facility (ATRF) and at NCI at Frederick, Building 549 from noon to 1:00 p.m. on select days throughout July and August.  Visit the Summer Video Series webpage for the complete schedule.

Complete information on both summer events is available from the Spotlight section of the Scientific Library’s website.
