Employees must have a Scientific Library account to use the Library. Anyone interested in an account should visit the Library, in Building 549 or the ATRF, and complete a form. The form is available for printing here. A registered barcode is necessary for off-site access to the Library’s website, for access to the document delivery request forms, and for checking out materials from the Library’s physical collection.

Only employees may check out books and other circulating materials. All new books and media are displayed on the New Materials Shelf for 2 weeks before circulating.

Circulation times for library materials:
Books and Kindles 8 weeks with NO renewals
Books with holds 2 weeks with NO renewals
Reserve books 4 weeks with 1 renewal
Audiovisuals 2 weeks with 1 renewal
Journals, reference books and microforms do NOT circulate

How do I renew items that I have checked out from the Scientific Library?

Please check the table above to see if your items can be renewed. If a renewal is permitted, you may renew by phone, in person, or online via your Library Account. All materials are subject to recall by the Library at any time.

  • Renew by phone – call 301-846-5848 to request assistance from a Library staff member.
  • Renew in person – Visit the Library, in Building 549 or the ATRF, and stop at the Circulation Desk or Library office to request a renewal.
  • Renew online – Locate the My Account/Renew Items option on the Library’s homepage in the upper right corner. You can also click “Renew an item” in the lower left corner of the homepage under “I would like to…”

After you reach the account login page, you must type your full name and your patron barcode, with no spaces. Your 10-digit barcode is located on the back of your PIV card. If you have a separate employee ID card, the library barcode sticker is on the back, consisting of 14 digits beginning with 20549….

  • Click “…items currently checked out” to view the materials you have checked out.
  • You can...
    • Renew selected items by placing checks in the boxes next to desired items and clicking “Renew Selected Items”

    • Renew all items by clicking “Renew All”
  • If you are successful, a new due date will display in the “STATUS” column.
  • If you are unsuccessful, the message “RENEW NOT ALLOWED” will appear.
  • Always check the STATUS column for information about your renewal.
