Register your Biological Research

As an NCI-F investigator, you are required to register your biological research with the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC). The IBC is responsible for reviewing projects that involve, but are not limited to:

  • rDNA/RNA
  • RNAi (shRNA/siRNA)
  • Pathogens
  • Oncogenes
  • Biological Toxins
  • Human Materials
  • Other potentially infectious material (OPIM)
  • Transgenic (Tg) OR Knockout(KO)/In (KI) Animals
  • Dual Use materials
  • Nanotechnology

General Overview of Registration Process

  1. Initial review is conducted by the IBC Administrator/Biological Safety Officer (BSO) for completeness and biological safety concerns
  2. Registration is then sent to IBC lead reviewer(s)
  3. Questions for clarification are sent to the PI (~1 week to respond)
  4. Upon receipt, the updates are redistributed to lead reviewers and additional questions are asked, if needed
  5. IBC review - IBC determines if registry should be approved, conditionally approved or deferred
  6. PI will be contacted by IBC Administrator or BSO regarding their status after the IBC meeting
  7. Upon approval, PI will receive an electronic approval memo from the IBC Administrator with the final registration attached
