Development of a multiplex onco-panel

A new, joint project between the Molecular Detection Group of the Protein Expression Laboratory (PEL) and Dr. Denise Whitby (Viral Oncology Section, ACVP) has been funded by the Office of Aids Research to develop multiplex assays for antibodies to oncogenic agents of public health importance in Uganda.  This project will provide valuable insight into the effect of the HIV epidemic on the epidemiology of oncogenic agents and the tools developed will be applicable to many other populations.  These studies proposed by Denise Whitby are responsive to the Trans-NIH Strategic plan objective-F: Treatment of AIDS-Related Cancers : “Develop therapeutic and prevention strategies for AIDS-defining and other HIV-associated malignancies based on an improved understanding of the role of infectious agents (e.g., KSHV/HHV-8, EBV, HPV, HCV, Merkel cell virus, and HBV) in their pathogenesis” and also “Study populations in resource-limited settings at increased risk of AIDS-defining and other HIV-related malignancies due to endemic infectious agents (e.g., KSHV/HHV-8), EBV, and HPV-associated cervical cancer.’”
