Take Your Child to Work Day - A Success!

Not only adults, but scores of children were buzzing around the Scientific Library on Tuesday, June 27.  They were all taking part in the annual Take Your Child to Work Day event.  It seems that employees and their children were excited to attend the event which had been paused since 2019 due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.   The theme in the Library circled around nature’s wonder, the honey bee!  The Scientific Library’s Hub Activities included crafting bees for the index book tree in the Library alcove area, putting together puzzles, and watching Ms. Frizzle take the Magic School Bus for an adventure “In a Beehive.”  However, the biggest draw was the R.E.A.D. Dogs.  R.E.A.D. dogs are registered therapy animals who volunteer with their handler as a team, going to schools, libraries, and many other settings as reading companions for children.  The Library staff look forward to planning and participating in this annual campus-wide event!

Laptop Librarian Service

The Laptop Librarian Service brings institutional knowledge and super-searching skills to NCIF staff in places other than the library.  Our librarians work with staff to understand their domain areas, pinpoint resources, provide current awareness and anticipate their information needs.

Our embedded Laptop Librarians are:

Alan Doss is our Chemical Sciences Informationist; he has worked in lab environments and specializes in chemical research and provides bibliographic chemistry searches. His Laptop Librarian Program areas are:  Molecular Histopathology Laboratory (MHL), the Center for Advanced Preclinical Research (CAPR), and the Vaccine, Immunity, and Cancer Directorate (VICD). Alan regularly provides long-haul Covid and HPV related items for VICD as well as the latest scientific news related to cancer research to MHL and CAPR.

Matt Stirling is our Biosciences Informationist; his background is in biotechnology and he specializes in pharmaceutical development and clinical trials topics. Bioscience knowledge areas include all aspects of the biological sciences, biochemistry, and other interdisciplinary areas.  His Laptop Librarian Program area supports the Clinical Monitoring Research Program Directorate (CMRPD).  A recent example of the Laptop Librarian service includes a presentation on medical writing resources and style guides to CMRPD staff.

Our Laptop Librarians have subject-specific knowledge and will meet you where you are and assist you with your specific needs.  Visit with a Librarian on Tuesdays at the ATRF from 1 to 3 pm or reach out to Matt or Alan for a personal consultation on your specific needs.
