Drop-In Activities

The Drop-In location offers an open area where participants can enjoy a variety of educational (and entertaining) activities without having to register for a specific time period.

Children do not need to register for specific activities, but they do have to register for the event. To register your child, go to the child registration page.

Fantastic Feats of Regeneration Children will learn about animal regeneration, the creation of lost body parts after injury. They will be introduced to whole body regeneration in planarian flatworms, a popular regeneration lab model. Planarians can be cut into many small pieces, and each piece creates a complete adult worm! Children will learn about: 1) major anatomical systems in planarians (e.g., the nervous system) 2) how anatomical systems are organized (cells > tissues > organs > anatomical systems) 3) how planarian anatomy relates to human anatomy 4) how anatomical systems are rebuilt during regeneration Children will observe and discuss: 1) a living planarian regeneration time course 2) fixed and stained specimens documenting regeneration of major anatomical systems (e.g., the nervous system)
Fire Extinguisher Station with escape maze Again the NCI-Shady Grove Emergency Management team helps us every year with this fun activity. We usually set up the Fire extinguisher station and maze in the Lobby area of building 549 near the auditorium. Hopefully you have the full description they provided in the past. If not I will see if they can provide it.
Geospatial program NCI Shady Grove Emergency management team assists us with TYCTWD. This project involves a table with sand and an overhead light that display's mapping layers on the sand. They set-up in 549 Classroom A. I currently do not have the full description, but this will be the 3rd year participating.
Inside the Lab Animal Sciences Program Participants will get to enter a staged animal research facility where multiple animal research related activities will be set-up.
NIH Police K-9 Demo NIH Police will have demo of K-9 searching for specific materials and interacting with the children. NIH Police Officers will be available to meet and greet and show the children their vehicles.
