From the desk of Craig Reynolds, Associate Director

Frederick National Laboratory Staff,

NCI Director Harold Varmus recently announced that the NCI-Frederick campus has been approved to use a new name befitting its status as a national laboratory - Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research (FNLCR) or Frederick National Lab for short.

The title "national laboratory" is a very special designation with less than 50 national laboratories in the United States. Some, such as Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, do include some biological research in their scientific portfolios. However, the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research is devoted solely to biomedical research and is therefore unique among the country's national laboratories.

In order to help the scientific community to become accustomed to this change please begin to use our new name immediately in your electronic and written correspondence, in phone greetings, and at any other opportunity. I realize that it will take time to replace stationery, business cards, and signage, but I hope that you will use the interim time to good effect in helping our colleagues, collaborators, and general public learn of the change.

The change in name should not effect your email address, or regular mail address that you currently use.

Craig W. Reynolds, Ph.D.
NCI Associate Director
