NameDescription
Be Healthy as A Fish- A Big Splash in Human Disease. Meet the tiny superstar of today’s science adventure: a little fish called the zebrafish! Don’t let its size fool you; this stripy swimmer is a real-life detective that helps scientists find the causes of human diseases and even discover new medicines. Pretty impressive for a fish, right? So how does it do it? Let’s dive in and find out! Today’s activities will turn you into mini-scientists: play “I Spy” to spot amazing features inside a zebrafish, explore its super-fast beating heart, and discover how this small fish is helping make humans healthier. Get ready to look closely, think big, and maybe even say, “Wow, fish are cooler than I thought!” ??
EHS Fire Safety Children will practice fire safety with an EHS maze in the 549 lobby.
Fantastic Feats of Regeneration Children will learn about animal regeneration, the creation of lost body parts after injury. They will be introduced to whole body regeneration in planarian flatworms, a popular regeneration lab model. Planarians can be cut into many small pieces, and each piece creates a complete adult worm! Children will learn about: 1) major anatomical systems in planarians (e.g., the nervous system) 2) how anatomical systems are organized (cells > tissues > organs > anatomical systems) 3) how planarian anatomy relates to human anatomy 4) how anatomical systems are rebuilt during regeneration Children will observe and discuss: 1) a living planarian regeneration time course 2) fixed and stained specimens documenting regeneration of major anatomical systems (e.g., the nervous system)
Fire and Ice Explore what happens to ordinary materials when they are exposed to the extreme temperatures found at FNLCR.
Geospatial program This project involves a table with sand and an overhead light that display's mapping layers on the sand.
Inside the Lab Animal Sciences Program Participants will get to enter a staged animal research facility where multiple animal research related activities will be set-up.
Molecular Histology Laboratory MHL will be setting up two tables in the library area with a poster, game with histology-style prizes, magnet-making station, and several goodies to take home.
NIH Police K-9 Demo NIH Police will have demo of K-9 searching for specific materials and interacting with the children. NIH Police Officers will be available to meet and greet and show the children their vehicles.
Owl Pellet Dissection Pellets are a record of what owls have eaten, and scientists can study them to learn more about the owl and the ecosystems in which they live. When kids dissect owl pellets, they can see and identify the tiny bones from that owl’s meal, can learn about the owl’s diet and place in the food web.
PPE Pursuit: The Ultimate Safety Showdown! Join us for an exciting game where kids can show off their knowledge of personal protective equipment (PPE)! Participants will race against the clock to dress dolls in the correct PPE, including helmets, gloves, masks, and goggles. Each participant must identify the appropriate gear for various occupations, such as a construction worker or scientist. Points will be awarded for accuracy and speed, and the top players will win special prizes! This fun and educational activity promotes safety awareness while encouraging quick thinking. Let’s see who can become the ultimate safety champion!
