This first NCI Information Technology Strategic Plan lays out high-level goals for NCI’s core IT services and infrastructure.

The plan was crafted to align IT services in the Center for Biomedical Informatics and Information Technology (CBIIT) and the NCI at Frederick Office of Scientific Operations (OSO) towards better serving NCI’s Divisions, Offices, and Centers (DOCs). The document is the result of collaborative conversations between scientists, leadership, and IT staff from across NCI’s many different DOCs.

Assessments of NCI’s scientific computing environment revealed the need to provide a more reliable IT infrastructure and a more responsive and agile IT support system. In response, an innovative workshop was held this summer that included people from a variety of DOCs. Workshop participants developed specific goals and related objectives for NCI’s core IT infrastructure, which provided the foundational basis of the strategic plan.

Merging the high-level strategic plan with action-oriented, long-range planning comprise the next phase. During this phase, small teams from within CBIIT and OSO (including LBR and DMS) will begin to spell out how each goal within the strategic plan will be accomplished. Implementation is expected at the start of the coming fiscal year.

The strategic plan is viewed by its contributors as a document that will continually evolve as customers, collaborators, and stakeholders share their input. This proactive approach to strategic planning increases CBIIT and OSO’s agility and improves their ability to respond promptly and efficiently to the demands of customers.
