To help promote the Feds Feed Families campaign, Joel Schneider, scientific director, Center for Cancer Research, Craig Reynolds, director, OSO, and David Heimbrook, president, Leidos Biomedical Research, Inc., will be locked in their offices for a day.
For the third year in a row, NCI at Frederick is participating in the Feds Feed Families campaign, which aims to stock food banks during the summer when donations are often limited. The 2016 campaign runs through August 31.
This year, the Office of Scientific Operations (OSO) has decided to send the campaign off with a twist. Rich Folkers, public affairs specialist, Office of Scientific Operations, came up with the idea for a “lock-in” event.
Craig Reynolds, director, OSO; Joel Schneider, scientific director, Center for Cancer Research; and David Heimbrook, president, Leidos Biomedical Research, Inc., will be locked in their offices for a day to help raise donations—they’ll be released only after 50 pounds of food have been collected in their name. Folkers called it “a silly idea for a not-so-silly cause.”
The event will take place Friday, August 12 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Everyone who donates to the campaign will get to ‘vote’ to release a specific director by placing non-perishable animal and human food items into boxes marked with that director’s name.
There will be three boxes in Building 427 as well as three boxes at the Advanced Technology Research Facility. OSO will provide hourly updates on the amount of food collected via Twitter and Facebook, as well as with an email sent through the EVENTS-INFO listserv.
NCI at Frederick has collected 428 pounds of food this summer, and the goal for the lock-in event is to match what has been donated so far. All items will be distributed to local charities, including Frederick’s Rescue Mission and Frederick Foodbank.
