New Occupational Health Services medical consultant Anusha Belani, M.D.
One of Occupational Health Services’ (OHS') most valuable resources is new medical consultant Anusha Belani, M.D., chief of epidemiology at Frederick Memorial Hospital (FMH).
Belani graduated from the University of Delhi and received her medical degree from Lady Hardinge Medical College in 1979. She is currently the only physician in Frederick County who specializes in infectious diseases. After completing her residency at Sinai Hospital, Belani established her own practice in Frederick in January of 1987.
For the past 29 years, Belani has been the chair of the Infection Control Committee. She was the recipient of the National Institutes of Health Allergy and Infectious Disease Training Grant (July 1984–June 1985). She also serves as a consultant for Hospital Employee Health Services and oversees hospital policies and procedures. Belani is also actively involved with the Antibiotic Stewardship Program that aims to control bacterial resistance.
OHS is responsible for the protection, maintenance, and promotion of health for all NCI at Frederick employees. Belani supports this mission by serving as a consultant for injuries and exposures related to communicable diseases as well as the prevention of infectious diseases. OHS provides travel consultation to all employees, and Belani’s expertise in Ebola and Zika virus has augmented these services. When asked why she decided to accept the position at OHS, she said “This was something I had not done before and wanted to challenge myself.” She added that she looks forward to expanding from hospital medicine to the biomedical research field at OHS.
