As the NIH Intramural Research Program (IRP) has grown, investigators have become isolated into individual institutes, buildings, and other administrative structures. In the early 1990s, formal
reviews of the IRP recognized that economies of materials and enhanced productivity could be gained by bringing together scientists that could collaborate and synergize. It was also recognized that better training of junior scientists and fellows could be accomplished by their broader exposure to senior investigators across campus. Within the IRP, Immunology encompasses over 240 laboratories in 19 ICs. As new technologies have been developed, it is crucial for this large contingent of IRP immunologists to have structured opportunities to exchange scientific information, meet each other, instruct junior scientists, and share physical and intellectual resources. In 1994, the NIH Immunology Interest Group (IIG) was formed. It is the largest scientific interest group on campus with over 500 active members and over 2000 subscribers to the listserv. In order to bring together scientists and share scientific data and training, the IIG established Annual NIH IIG Symposia, Training Workshop, and weekly Seminar Series.
