Quick Takes | Poster Quick Takes: Cells Use Particles to Trash Defective RNA

A study originating in NCI Frederick’s RNA Biology Laboratory has clarified why cells pack up and discard a certain type of RNA. Put simply, it’s a trash removal system meant to keep cells stable—and it’s relevant to cancer growth. The findings, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, came by examining the RNAs within extracellular vesicles.

Events | 19th Chili Cook-off and Heart Month Events Build Community

The piquant aroma of peppers and spices seasoned the hallways of Building 426. Eleven slow cookers from aspiring culinary champions lined a row of tables, a few large plates of cornbread alongside. After a one-year pause, the NIH Summer Internship Program (SIP) is back. A cohort of students will join NCI Frederick again this summer. Returning with an emphasis on scientific positions, the program has stirred considerable enthusiasm—and memories of past successes.

Fellows | CCR-FYI Colloquium Is an Unparalleled Opportunity; Registration Closes Soon

The CCR-FYI Colloquium, planned and coordinated almost entirely by fellows, is a two-day scientific meeting devoted to giving early-career scientists a chance to share their work and learn new skills. This year’s theme is The NIH Advantage: Where High Risk Meets High Reward. Registration and abstract submissions to present a poster at the 26th Center for Cancer Research Fellows and Young Investigators Colloquium, NCI’s headline conference for early-career scientists, close April 1. Registration to attend closes May 1. Presenters and attendees can register on the event website.
