The R&W Club Frederick’s 4th Annual Golf Tournament to benefit the Children’s Inn at NIH teed off on time despite cloudy weather and scattered showers. Employees from NCI at Frederick, the main NIH campus, and Leidos Biomed, along with family and friends, came to enjoy an afternoon at the beautiful Maryland National Golf Club in Middletown and to support a wonderful charity.
The 2016 Feds Feed Families campaign recently concluded, with the numbers released earlier this week. A grand total of 33,447 pounds of food were donated in less than three months, surpassing the goal of 28,000 pounds.
By day, Ross Smith is the compliance and security officer for Data Management Services, Inc., assigned to the National Cancer Institute (NCI) at Frederick. His role is to ensure the secure operation of in-house computer systems, servers, and network connections.
But in his spare time, Smith is also a volunteer firefighter and emergency medical technician (EMT).
A field of study that derives its name from the Latin root for “knowledge”—student interns had a shot at that clue for 200 points in the 10th annual Student Science Jeopardy Tournament, but their minds went blank.

Earlier this summer, NCI at Frederick lost a friend and colleague, Charles Shive, to cancer. Mr. Shive, better known to most as Charlie, was a systems architect and information technology manager for the Data Science and Information Technology Program, focused on the re-engineering initiative of the Clinical Trials Reporting System.
For the third year in a row, NCI at Frederick is participating in the Feds Feed Families campaign, which aims to stock food banks during the summer when donations are often limited. The 2016 campaign runs through August 31. This year, the Office of Scientific Operations (OSO) has decided to send the campaign off with a twist. Rich Folkers, public affairs specialist, Office of Scientific Operations, came up with the idea for a "lock-in" event.
Young children often enjoy playing with dogs or cuddling with cats at home, but at Take Your Child to Work Day, kids of all ages had the opportunity to brush horses, pet alpacas, and observe laboratory mice, fish, and frogs.
On June 29, the annual event provided 187 children of NCI at Frederick staff a variety of hands-on learning opportunities.
Interns were promised pizza, but they got more than just food as they watched “Someone You Love: The HPV Epidemic” at this summer’s second student seminar. In the Building 549 auditorium, students learned about human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI).
NCI is a valuable asset to the Frederick community as a major employer, a purchaser of goods and services, and an educator and mentor for students from elementary through post-graduate school, Craig Reynolds told about 70 people, including many community leaders, at the Fort Detrick Alliance’s quarterly breakfast briefing at Hood College.
