Genomic Data Commons 2.0: A Valuable Tool for Cancer Researchers

Imagine, for a moment, that you’re a scientist studying ways to combat a rare form of cancer that overwhelmingly manifests in a specific group of people. You suspect a series of genetic mutations. Testing for the presence of those alterations one at a time would involve a prohibitive amount of time and money. What you need is a database of thousands of cancer cases, characterized for genetic data, to which you could compare your cases. Enter NCI’s Genomic Data Commons.

Awards | NCI at Frederick Team Receives 2014 HHS Green Champions Award

A team of NCI and Leidos Biomedical Research employees at NCI at Frederick received the Energy and Fleet Management Award, one of the 2014 Department of Health and Human Services Green Champions Awards, for comparing the costs and energy usage of two -80°C freezer technologies. This was the first scientific study to be jointly conducted by Leidos Biomedical Research’s Applied and Developmental Research Directorate and Facilities Maintenance and Engineering Directorate.

Events | Ninth Annual Student Science Jeopardy Tournament Set for July 22

The Scientific Library staff is pleased to announce the return of the annual Student Science Jeopardy Tournament July 22, in the auditorium of Building 549. The contest will begin at 10 a.m. and will run continuously until its conclusion at approximately 12:45 p.m. A video of the tournament will be broadcast live at the Advanced Technology Research Facility.

Technology Transfer | Technology Transfer Center to Assume Patenting and Licensing Responsibilities

The NCI Technology Transfer Center (TTC) is undergoing a reorganization that will bring patenting and licensing responsibilities to the Shady Grove and Frederick offices by October 2015. The reorganization is a result of an effort begun in 2014 by NIH to improve the organizational structure of technology transfer at NIH to meet the rapid rate of change within science, technology, and industry, and to better align the science and laboratory goals with the licensing and patenting process.

We did not receive any correct guesses for the current Poster Puzzler, which is an image of the top of the Building 434 picnic table, with a view looking towards Building 472. This picnic table and others across campus were supplied by the NCI at Frederick Campus Improvement Committee. Building 434, located on Wood Street, is home to the staff of Scientific Publications, Graphics & Media (SPGM), the Central Repository, and the NCI Experimental Therapeutics Program support group, Applied and Developmental Research Directorate.
