Former Student Nurse Esther Shafer Prescribes Literacy

After spending a total of five years as an intern for Occupational Health Services (OHS), former Werner H. Kirsten (WHK) intern Esther Shafer moved across the country to join the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. She now works on a reservation in southern Arizona, where she is providing medicine—and reading material—for the Tohono O-odham Nation.

Where Are They Now: Robert Vaughn, a Mathematician Who Wants to Give Back

For Robert Vaughn, an internship at NCI at Frederick during the summer of 2015 was when theory met reality, changing the course of his life. While Vaughn had recently completed his undergraduate degree in mathematics, it was his internship with mentor Brian Luke, Ph.D., principal scientist, Advanced Biomedical Computing Center (ABCC), that showed him how to apply his knowledge to practical uses.

Where Are They Now? Nicole Pohida’s Passion for Nursing

After interning under three mentors at NCI at Frederick, former WHK intern Nicole Pohida is currently preparing to complete her undergraduate nursing degree at the University of Maryland. The aspiring nurse practitioner is passionate about doing the detective work necessary to solve challenging medical riddles, and she credits her mentors for helping stimulate her already-budding interest in science, learn new skills, and pursue her goals.

Second Annual Technology Showcase Fosters Camaraderie and Collaboration

“Collaboration” was the word of the day at the second annual Technology Showcase, held June 13 at the Advanced Technology Research Facility (ATRF). Hundreds of science and business professionals gathered to network and learn about technologies at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and Frederick National Laboratory that are available for licensing and partnering.

Rainy weather couldn’t dampen the spirits of visitors to the 2018 Spring Research Festival, which brought together scientists from the Frederick National Laboratory (FNL), NCI at Frederick, and the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command (USAMRMC) and showcased the important research that takes place every day at Fort Detrick.

Take Your Child to Work Day Shows Children that Science Is Fun

There’s still time to register your child for NCI at Frederick’s annual Take Your Child to Work Day, which will be held on Wednesday, June 27. Children who attend will be able to choose from nearly 30 activities this year. Several programs are scheduled to occur at various locations throughout the day, while others will be open on a “come as you please” basis all day long.
