Upcoming Open Houses Aim to Show Employees a Way to Inspire Local Children

This December, the Office of Scientific Operations (OSO) is hosting two Elementary Outreach Program open houses that will show NCI at Frederick staff how they can help educate local elementary-aged students about science. This is OSO’s first year holding such events for the Elementary Outreach Program.

Researchers Identify Possible Reason for Loss of Brain Function in Patients with ALS

A team of scientists in NCI at Frederick’s Center for Cancer Research Mouse Cancer Genetics Program and their collaborators at the University of Florence have identified a link between the presence of a growth factor receptor and cognitive impairments in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease). 

Super Heroes Assemble for Halloween 5k

Thirty-five costumed participants showed up at the Halloween 5k to burn off some calories from the Recreation and Welfare Club’s Krispy Kreme fundraiser. Characters including Alvin and the Chipmunks, a member of the Incredibles, Rich Uncle Pennybags, Spiderman, Black Panther, a spartan warrior, and a group of runaway brides walked and jogged around the course as the sun set behind the Appalachian Mountains.

Sharpless Looks Back at His First Year as NCI Director at Fall Town Hall

Employees crowded into the Building 549 auditorium as Norman E. Sharpless, M.D., took the podium at Shady Grove, addressing NCI and contractor employees watching live and via telecast viewings. “What a difference a year makes,” he began, reflecting on how he was sworn in on the same day exactly one year ago.

NCI at Frederick Employees Scare Up a Good Read at 18th Annual Book and Media Swap

The Scientific Library’s Book and Media Swap—an NCI at Frederick tradition dating back to the turn of the millennium—kicked off on Halloween this year. Patrons, several in costume, flipped through hundreds of books in hopes of finding a hidden gem, a new bedtime read, or a gift for a friend or parent.
