Echoes from the Past: Life and Times of a Scientific Library, Part 1

While World War II raged, engineers and tradespeople built up a little airport that’d sat humbly on the outskirts of Frederick since 1929, transforming it into a microbiological research facility. The site, renamed “Camp Detrick,” was to be the home of the new U.S. Army Biowarfare Research Laboratories. This is where the story of the NCI Frederick Scientific Library truly begins.

Upcoming Life Sciences Symposium Will Grapple with Reproducibility Crisis

Experts across scientific fields will convene at Hood College in Frederick, MD, from June 16–18 for the fourth Life Sciences Symposium, aiming to ameliorate the so-called “reproducibility crisis” in research. 19th Chili Cook-off and Heart Month Events Build Community

The piquant aroma of peppers and spices seasoned the hallways of Building 426. Eleven slow cookers from aspiring culinary champions lined a row of tables, a few large plates of cornbread alongside. Nearby, representatives from the Research Donor Program and FNL United availed themselves for conversation. The 19th Chili Cook-off, hosted by Occupational Health Services, closed out American Heart Month at NCI Frederick with camaraderie, a push for community, and—of course—good food.

Summer Internship Program Returns This Year, Continuing a Tradition of Success

After a one-year pause, the NIH Summer Internship Program (SIP) is back. A cohort of students will join NCI Frederick again this summer. Returning with an emphasis on scientific positions, the program has stirred considerable enthusiasm—and memories of past successes.
